Most organisations today are committed to building diverse and inclusive workplaces. That’s a positive step forward.

We recognise the value of different backgrounds, cultures, genders and perspectives because better decisions are made when people bring different experiences to the table.

So why is age so often overlooked?

When experienced candidates are dismissed because they’re considered “too old” or not the “right fit”, organisations risk losing more than technical skills.

They lose institutional knowledge, resilience, perspective and the ability to mentor the next generation.

True diversity isn’t about representing one generation over another. It’s about creating workplaces where different generations learn from each other, challenge each other’s thinking and contribute their unique strengths.

The strongest teams I’ve worked with have never been defined by age. They’ve been defined by respect, collaboration and a shared commitment to achieving great outcomes.

If we genuinely believe diversity drives better organisations, then experience deserves a place in that conversation.

Is it time we recognised age as an essential part of diversity and inclusion – not an exception to it?
