Considering a career change can feel overwhelming, especially when it feels like you’re starting from scratch.
In most cases, you’re not.
What you’re really facing isn’t a lack of experience; it’s a lack of translation.
I see this a lot.
People assume their background won’t be relevant in a new direction, so they focus on what they haven’t done.
But the more useful question is: what have you already done that still applies?
Things like:
- managing competing priorities
- improving processes
- communicating across teams
- adapting in uncertain situations
These don’t disappear when you change industries, they just get described differently.
I worked with someone who was convinced they had no relevant experience for a new role. On paper, their background looked unrelated.
But when we broke it down, they’d led projects, improved workflows, and regularly worked with stakeholders across the business.
Same experience. Different framing.
That shift made the move feel realistic, not risky.
You don’t need to reinvent yourself.
You need to reposition yourself.
A simple place to start:
- List a few of your core skills, then ask where else they would be valuable.
The answer is usually broader than you expect.
